Lord, what a change within us one short hour
Spent in Thy presence will prevail to make;
What heavy burdens from our bosoms take;
What parched grounds refeshed as with a shower!
We kneel – and all about us seems to lower;
We rise – and all, the distant and the near,
Stands forth in sunny outline, brave and clear,
We kneel, how weak! We rise, how full of power!
Why, therefore, should we do ourselves this wrong,
Or others, that we are not always strong;
That we are over borne with care,
Anxious and troubled, when with us is prayer,
And joy and strength and courage are with Thee.

I know not by what methods rare;
But this I know, God answers prayer.
I know that He has given His word,
Which tells me that prayer is always heard
And will be answered soon or late;
And so I pray, and calmly wait;
I know not if the blessings sought
Will come in just the way I thought,
But leave my prayers with Him alone,
Whose will is wiser than my own,
Assured that He will grant my quest,
Or send some answer far more blest.

He answered prayer,
Not in the way I sought,

To yield obedience, not asking why,

MY PRAYER

Lord Jesus, make Thyself to me
A living, bright reality;
More present to faith’s vision keen
Than any outward object seen;

A YOUNG MAN’S PRAYER

God, make me a man -
Give me the strength to stand for right
When other folks have left the fight.
Give me the courage of the man
Who knows that if he wills he can.
Teach me to see in every face
The good, the kind, and not the base.
Make me sincere in word and deed,
Blot out from me all sham and greed.
Help me to guard my troubled soul
By constant, active, self-control.
Clean up my thoughts, my speech, my play,
And keep me pure from day to day.
O make of me a man!
