The lives of true heroism are those in which
There are no great deeds to look back upon.
It is the little things well done that go
To make up a successful and truly good life.
-Theodore Roosevelt.

PRAYER
Richard C. Trench
Lord, what a change within us one short hour
Spent in Thy presence will prevail to make;
What heavy burdens from our bosoms take;
What parched grounds refeshed as with a shower!
We kneel – and all about us seems to lower;
We rise – and all, the distant and the near,
Stands forth in sunny outline, brave and clear,
We kneel, how weak! We rise, how full of power!
Why, therefore, should we do ourselves this wrong,
Or others, that we are not always strong;
That we are over borne with care,
Anxious and troubled, when with us is prayer,
And joy and strength and courage are with Thee.
I know not by what methods rare;
But this I know, God answers prayer.
I know that He has given His word,
Which tells me that prayer is always heard
And will be answered soon or late;
And so I pray, and calmly wait;
I know not if the blessings sought
Will come in just the way I thought,
But leave my prayers with Him alone,
Whose will is wiser than my own,
Assured that He will grant my quest,
Or send some answer far more blest.
He answered prayer,
Not in the way I sought,
Not in the way I thought He ought,
But in His own good way, and I can see,
He answered in the fashion best for me.
Each day I pray, God give me strength anew
To do the task I do not wish to do.
To yield obedience, not asking why,
To love and own the truth and scorn the lie,
To look a cold world bravely in the face,
To cheer for those that pass me in the race.
To bear my burdens gaily, unafraid
To lend a hand to those that need my aid.
To measure what I am by what I give.
God give me strength that I may rightly live!
God, make me a man -
Give me the strength to stand for right
When other folks have left the fight.
Give me the courage of the man
Who knows that if he wills he can.
Teach me to see in every face
The good, the kind, and not the base.
Make me sincere in word and deed,
Blot out from me all sham and greed.
Help me to guard my troubled soul
By constant, active, self-control.
Clean up my thoughts, my speech, my play,
And keep me pure from day to day.
O make of me a man!
THE PROOF
E. R. Fuller
If radio’s slim fingers
Can pluck a melody
From night, and toss it over
A continent or sea;
If the petaled white notes
Of a violin
Are blown across a mountain
Or a city’s din;
If songs like crimson roses,
Are culled from thin blue air;
Why should mortals wonder
If God hears prayer?
GUIDANCE
J. McE. Vincent
When great decisions are pending,
You do not know just what to do,
Questions of weight seem unending,
You can’t see the wisest way through,
Go to the great God who made you,
And spread it before hiim in prayer,
Ask for direction and guidance,
And then leave the whole matter there.
His hands will guide and direct you,
His wisdom, your wisdom shall be.
He said, in labor and trouble,
Let My children come unto Me.
“I am able,” saith the Master,
“To forgive your every sin.
If you only trust Me fully
You can be made pure within.”
There is a bridge, whereof the span
Is rooted in the heart of man, And reaches, without pile or rod,
Unto the great white Throne of God.
Its traffic is in human sighs,
Fervently wafted to the skies;
‘Tis the one path from despair,
And it is called the bridge of prayer.
-Gilbert Thomas.
Put then thy trust in God.
In duty’s path go on.
Fix on His word thy steadfast eye
So shall thy work be done.
No profit canst thou gain
By self-consuming care.
To Him commend thy cause
His ear attends thy softest prayer.
